Georgia Association of Teacher Educators (GATE)

2012 Awards Information

GATE offers five awards for work in teacher education in the State of Georgia:  1) distinguished program, 2) distinguished research, 3) distinguished dissertation, 4) distinguished clinician, and 5) distinguished supervising teacher. Award criteria and submission information is outlined below.

DISTINGUISHED PROGRAM IN TEACHER EDUCATION

This award has been established to recognize and honor outstanding teacher education programs which exemplify joint participation by local education agencies and higher education institutions in program development and administration.

Award Criteria:

  • Program has been cooperatively developed and administered by institutions of higher education and local educational agencies.
  • Goals are clearly stated and directed at the establishment of identifiable teacher behaviors.
  • Program has an evaluation protocol which is appropriate, operational and directly related to its goal.
  • Data were provided to demonstrate that after program implementation, goals were achieved.
  • Principles on which the program is based are theoretically sound and are adaptable by other teacher education programs.

Nomination Packet Format:

•  8 1/2 × 11' pages, maximum of 30 pages.

•  Cover page with name of program and institutional participants and contact person with address, phone number and email.

•  Two page overview of the program

•  15-20 pages describing the program

•  5-10 pages of evaluation data

Electronic submission or hard copy is acceptable

DISTINGUISHED RESEARCH IN TEACHER EDUCATION

This award has been established to recognize and encourage outstanding investigations influencing teacher education and/or student learning.

Award Criteria:

  • Person(s) must be involved in research in teacher education at the college/university level, in public or private school systems, or in other educational agencies may enter. The author need not be active members of GATE
  • Prefer works which have been published or accepted for publication in recognized journals within the last two years. Other research papers of publishable quality prepared within the last two years which contribute to the knowledge of teacher education may be submitted.
  • Entry submitted must not exceed twenty (20) double-spaced, type-written pages.

DISTINGUISHED CLINICIAN IN TEACHER EDUCATION

This award has been established to honor school-based teacher educators who work in a clinical environment which enables them to become better at what they do. Three corresponding divisions of the award have been established. An award may be given annually in each division.

Award Criteria:

  • Member of ATE and GATE State Affiliate (three-year minimum) or
  • Service to ATE and GATE State Affiliate or
  • Nominated by GATE member
  • Primary employer is a school district. Functions in dual roles of classroom teacher and supervisor of preservice teachers (Division I); or functions in dual roles of classroom teacher and mentor of other teachers; or, school district employee whose primary role is staff development/in-service teacher education.
  • Demonstrates roles as a clinician through the following:
    • Assists teachers in applying the content of the pedagogy of effective teaching
    • Emphasizes reflective teaching and self analysis
    • Employs exemplary coaching /conference techniques
    • Demonstrates other outstanding supervisory traits

Nomination Packet Format:

•  All items are to be mailed in one envelope.

•  8 1/2 × 11' pages, maximum of 20 pages.

Nomination Packet Must Include:

•  Cover page to include nominee's name, home address and telephone number, name and address of employing school, job title with description of position and explanation of duties, dates of employment; name and addresses of immediate supervisor and school administrator; and, nominator's name, position in State Affiliate, home and businesses addresses, and telephone numbers.

•  Professional resume of nominee which includes a chronological listing of educational experiences, previous positions, and professional activities.

•  Letters from supervisors, peers, students, and professional colleagues to support nomination (no more than three).

•  Other documentation that demonstrates or confirms outstanding performance or meritorious service as a teacher educator, for example: newspaper articles, award certificates, other commendations, invitations to present, expression of appreciation, program materials developed by the nominee.

DISTINGUISHED DISSERTATION IN TEACHER EDUCATION

This annual award was commissioned to encourage, recognize, and promote exemplary doctoral level research which substantially contributes to the improvement of teacher education. Special recognition will also be extended to the professor who directed the dissertation.

Award Criteria:

•  Must have completed a doctoral dissertation at an accredited college or university within the past two years.

•  The topic of the dissertation must be directly related to teacher education. The author need not be active members of GATE

 

Nomination Packet Must Include:

  • A cover page to include the person making the nomination, the nominee’s name,       telephone number and e-mail address, the university awarding the dissertation,     
          and the faculty advisor for the dissertation.
  • A synopsis of the dissertation.  This synopsis should not exceed 20 double-spaced pages and must be accompanied by a one-page abstract. The author should make every attempt to eliminate all identifiable references to individuals and places that might bias the reviewers.
  • Self-nominations are not accepted.

GATE SUPERVISING TEACHER OF THE YEAR

This award, in honor Robert Knowles, a former president of GATE (1975-1976) and an educator at both the public school and college level, recognizes a classroom teacher whose teaching and supervision excellence merits special recognition. It carries a monetary stipend, a year's membership in GATE and an appropriate plaque.

Nominations should be typed and in letter form. They should emphasize the unique contribution made to your program and/or contribution to the profession. The submission should be limited to one letter of recommendation and no more than two pages. More than one person may nominate on the same letter. Please include the address of the nominee, the work site, and the name of the principal or superintendent. Two additional letters of support should be included in the nomination packet. No nomination letters will be returned.

Award Criteria:

  • Must be a classroom teacher in a Georgia public county or city school system or in a private independent or parochial school in Georgia.
  • Extensive experience with student teachers from teacher education programs in colleges and universities in the state.   It is desirable, but not mandatory, that the recipient also have experience working with early field experience students prior to their student teaching.
  • Must demonstrate a cooperative attitude in working with college or university personnel.
  • Must be prepared for effective supervision. Evidence of preparation may include, but not limited to, seminars, and workshops for the development of supervision skills and Supervising Teacher Service (TSS) certification.
