The Southern Regional Association of Teacher Educators is the largest of the regions with 14 states being represented. Georgia will host the next conference on November 19, 2003. The conference will begin on Wednesday with an Early Bird Reception and Workshops. Breakout sessions and workshops will extend to mid-Saturday. Local magnet school in the Savannah area will provide entertainment. Keynote speakers are still being contacted. A call for papers is available in conference materials.
Program chairs for SRATE were announced.
§ Jennifer Harrison and Julie Dangel will work on the program committee. There is a need for reviewers, recruitment of providers, securing exhibitors, and organizing the program.
§ Beryle Baker and Joan Schwartz will work as co-chairs of hospitality, door prizes, media, and public relations.
§ Gwen Middlebrooks and Susan White will be co-chairs of the hospitality committee and will work on such as packet contents, table decorations, river cruises, entertainment, etc.
§ Jackie Castleman and Julia Dorminey will be co-chairs in charge of registration.
The last Savannah conference broke records for attendance of 450+. Members present were encouraged to participate and to add their names to a sign up list of volunteers.
Next, Jennifer Harrison called for feedback about the fall conference. There was discussion about trading the reception for coffee in the morning. Problems mentioned regarding the Macon location was lack of restaurants in the area and inability to bring in any food. Cosgrove suggested that perhaps GACTE could pay for the Wednesday afternoon/evening reception and GATE could then afford the coffee in the mornings. It was suggested that a map on the program next time might be helpful. Also, a marquee outside of the entrance to the conference location and signs in the lobby might have been helpful to some. It was suggested that conference evaluation forms might prove useful feedback to presenters, and regarding facilities.
Jennifer Harrison then asked the group if they wanted to follow up on any of the speaker’s suggestions as an organization. Cosgrove noted that four years ago a position paper had been developed and shared with the legislature at GEA meetings. She suggested that much has changed since HB 1187, etc. Harrison called for volunteers to work on this and to visit at the capitol.
Jackie McDowell announced that this would be her last year with the journal. A new editor is needed for next year. Typically there is a call for papers in April. There was a question about whether the date should be later to get more proposals. During the summer packets are developed for reviewers and 4 more reviewers were added this past summer. Editing usually begins in August, with the journal going to printers in September for October distribution at the fall conference. Most recently, the campus printer at Berry College has been used. This task is easier than ever with word processing and publisher software currently available. Any printer could be used for the job. The most difficult tasks have been finding reviewers and organizing. The typical journal contains 3 or 4 articles. There were not enough submissions (total of eleven) for two journals this past year. It has been Jackie’s experience that the reviewers have given good comments and there have been several re-submissions. The cover was recently re-designed. Jackie offered to help train any volunteers for the editor’s position, but it has been located at Berry for 5 years and it is now time to rotate it to another location.
The meeting was adjourned at 4
Submitted by John Rhodes, Secretary.
