GATE EXECUTIVE MEETING

October 23, 2002

Call to order: 7:00 pm

 

Minutes: Copies of minutes form August 24, 2002 were distributed. Minutes were accepted.

 

Membership Report – Julia Dorminey

138 regular members, 6 life-time members, 8 retired members, 4 student members, 4 complimentary members for a total of 160 members. This is down a little, but it is expected to increase as conference registrations with membership payments are added.

 

Treasurer’s Report – Jackie Castleman

The treasurer’s report through October 15, 2002 was distributed and showed a total assets balance of $44,559.29 with about $1,300 yet to be deposited from current memberships.

 

Cosgrove offered a motion to allow retired members to attend conferences for the same price as student members ($35). The motion was seconded by Rhodes and approved.

 

Budget proposal was distributed.

 

A motion was made by Guyton and seconded by Dangel to increase coverage of expenses by AATE convention delegates to cover expenses up to a total of $1,000, as needed, and $40 per day. Discussion centered on justification of need and ability to cover the expense. Fro seven delegates, the total budget line would increase from $3,500 to $7,000. Motion was approved and changes will be reflected in the next budget report. Corrections will be made to the proposed budget.

 

Executive Secretary – Edi Guyton

Archiving of past records continues. Constitution, bylaws, and awards are now in electronic format and notebooks. Members can email request copies form Edi. She also invited suggestions about any other needs for electronic formatting. The annual report to ATE is due January 1 and delegates must be named at that time. Guyton requested an electronic copy of officers to submit along with this report. Guyton will also redraft awards information and bring it to the next conference at St. Simons Island.

 

Newsletter

Debra Bembry plans to re-establish a newsletter and invited everyone to participate. Ideas were brainstormed and included suggestions such as awards, continue features form old newsletters, conference recaps, ATE delegates’ reports, institutional highlights, advertisement of positions, message from executive secretary and president, scheduled visits from PSC/NCATE, minutes form the general business meeting, treasure’s reports, SRATE.

 

Conference Arrangements

Beryle Baker reported that 8 new members attended the Newcomer’s Breakfast last year and all 8 have returned this year. Motion by Dorminey, seconded by Dangel was approved to continue the Newcomer’s Breakfast.

 

Lou Castenell will be the opening speaker and will be introduced by Maryellen Cosgrove. At lunch, Edi Guyton will introduce Suttiwan Cox. Travel expenses and a $300 check for her school will be presented to Cox. Paul Beare, GACTE president in order to highlight the Spring Conference, will introduce the last speaker, Fran Watkins.

 

Approval of Board

It was decided that a vote on any new board members should be obtained at the general business meeting tomorrow. The slate will be presented informally and any changes in positions will be noted.

 

SRATE Conference – Maryellen Cosgrove

The group represents fourteen southeastern states. Two yeas ago, the meeting was held in New Orleans and in 2003, it will come to Savannah. The last time it was held there in 1990, it was a good success. Handouts outlining conference themes and a tentative agenda were distributed. Bob Strozier will be the featured speaker at the Flannery O’Connor House.

 

Beryle Baker asked bout a publicity package and Cosgrove agreed to check into it. Two David Watt Scholarships are available to pay conference expenses for helpers at the Convention. Suggested speakers were for Frank Brogan, Barbara Christmas or other diverse speakers.

 

New Business

The need for an interim meeting in January was discussed and Cosgrove will let everyone know after her meeting in Arkansas. She requested that members keep thinking of potential speakers for SRATE. The Thursday, Friday, and Closing sessions next November will all need speakers.
